In my first full residential year a fellow student was Bart Kruytbosch. Unfortunately he died in a car accident in his first year in College, 1961.

He was a fine sprinter and carried the College hopes in the inter-collegiate athletics.

I remember him particularly because he came from Haileybury College, where I was chaplain for 25 years of my ministry later in my career. There Bart’s name was on the prize list because he had overcome his hearing disability (he was profoundly deaf) to achieve his matriculation and a place in Ormond. I often selected the Kruytbosch Award recipient for achievement in overcoming a disability to succeed at matriculating.

The Bart Kruytenbosch memorial statue is in the garden between the Main Drive and Picken Court at Ormond. When visiting College I make a point of going to the Memorial.

The life size bronze figure of an athlete that forms part of the Kruytbosch Memorial in a peaceful corner of Picken Lawn.
